Following their mystic, dark and haunting self titled debut album on Utech Records, Ural Umbo has returned with their follow up release, a forward thinking, nebulous post doom and mysterious album Fog Tapes.
Ural Umbo do not make a secret out of their love for the modern forms of Doom and Black Metal. But still, they are far away from being just a part of the Experimental Metal or Drone Doom scene. They are much more focused on film scor-ish compositions, bizzare atmosphere and haunting melodies with a much broader spectrum of instruments than just downtuned metal guitars in combination with sluggish drums.
As the name Fog Tapes implied, the basic tracks where recorded in a first step direct to analog tapes. The second step was focused on enriching the raw material with shimmering bowed cymbals, delicate wind chimes and glockenspiel. This steps result into an organic and hypnotic mixture of lurking electro-acoustics, atmospheric black metal approaches, epic drones, slow evolving melodies, filigree percussion layers, psychedelic intervals, doom mantras, soundtrack themes, ritual drum eruptions and hidden voices.
